Choosing car seats for your baby wisely is very important if safety and comfort is your desire for your child. It is hard to choose but you have to do it. The various ads by the manufacturers may be very tempting but remember, these are not what you should consider the best way to choose.

Car seats are very important safety accessories but if not chosen wisely they can be just the opposite.

The first step to take before choosing car seats for your baby is to check your state laws regarding car seats. Child seats must meet federal safety standards.

The next question to answer is about the types of car seats to choose. There are different types of car seats and features. Here are some basics about the types of seats and features.

a)Rear facing, infant only seats: are specifically designed for infants of 5 to 20 pounds. These types of seats come along with a handle to carry the seated baby along with you and snap and fit it into a frame or stroller. The detachable base that stays in the car allows you to easily snap the seat in without messing around with the seat belt.

b)Convertible seat: These seats can be made to face rearward or forward and are best fitted for babies of 20 to 40 pounds. The American Academy of Pediatrics advice to parents is to keep your child facing backwards till he is one year or has crossed the manufacturer’s limit of weight and height. These seats are perfect if you have to follow the instructions as you can easily convert the seat into a forward facing seat.

c)Combination seat: can be used with a harness or as a booster. They have the capacity of holding children of at least one year or 20 to 100 pounds. These front facing seats often called as toddler or booster seats are changeable from a five point harness to a belt-positioning booster seat.

d)Booster seats: Capable of holding a child of 30 to 100 pounds these booster seats are for cars without a head or a high back. But children should not be moved from a full harness to a booster seat unless they of the minimum weight and height permitted by the manufacturer. Choosing booster seats is also a good idea if your child usually falls asleep in the seat, or if the seat belt still does not properly fit with a backless booster.

e)Built-in (Integrated) Seats: There are some manufacturers like Volvos, Daimler Chrysler and Dodge which offer built-in booster or child seats as factory options. This certainly is a pretty idea but it does not mean that you should fold your arms and wait for the car to be delivered. Check carefully with the manufacturer to see what weight and height limitation they have.

These are some basics of the types of baby car seats but there are also some accessories to add. The federal law requires new car seats and most vehicles to feature a LATCH or Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children. There is no need to use a seat belt if both the child’s seat and the car seats are equipped with LATCH. LATCH comes in rigid and non-rigid attachment options. Generally the rigid ones are the easiest to install but it also depends upon the car seat models and placement of cushions.

Finally there, choosing car seats for your baby was very much like a nightmare in the beginning, but after understanding which type of seats would be the best, there is nothing hard. Just make the right decision and go ahead for it but do make sure to ask the store about their return back policy because children are more sensitive than what you may have thought. They may not be reasonably comfortable in spite of choosing the right type of car seat. The reason may be the size of the seat. One size may not exactly fit the child despite of all the harness adjustments.

As a Mother who owns both models, I will tell you the major differences between these two seats from my point of view.The Frontier has 2 cup holders, but they can not both be out, as one hits the door when installed on far right or left.The Graco needs to be rethreaded.

My oldest DD takes the pad off of the crotch strap on the Frontier (she says it makes the seat look like a “baby seat” with the pad), but she can not do this with the Graco, as the crotch strap rubs on her legs causing red irritation when wearing shorts.If you have a smaller child, remember, he/she will be a big kid soon!1 Frontier is more expensive (which is why I got the Nautilus for my spare) #2 Frontier is SO much easier to adjust the shoulder height strap.The Frontier has a 5 seat area around the tush, but opens to a spacious 17 inch wide seat.This can get uncomfortable.I own 2 Britax Frontiers in Pink, and the Graco Nautilus in pink as well.This thinner look in NO WAY implies that Graco is safer for the thicker “wings”, as Britax states that its wings are “true side impact protection”.6 Heads slump forward for younger kids when sleeping in the Graco.8 Cup holder and “hidden” storage are neat in the Graco.This is not too much of an issue as we just leave them out.This does not happen when the seat is not snugged down, but when installed.Graco does not.4 Frontier has 3 crotch strap adjustments for easy fitting.Frontier also has the “hugs” system on the harness to minimize forward head movement.Graco does not state this.With a simple squeeze of a lever, the straps go up.The “wings” are farther away from the head and are angled just right as to allow sleeping and looking out the window.The graco pad is very thick and wraps the entire strap (between the legs) and then goes up to sit on the belly.The “wings” are thinner and have more of a “big” kid look.The plastic around wings appear to be of stronger material on the Frontier, even though they are thinner.7 The Graco has only a 5 inch seat width for the child to move around in.She does not seem to mind sitting on it, but it does not look too comfortable to me.5 Padding on Frontier is WAY thicker (on both seat and seat back)and more comfortable to sit on.This may not be an issue for the younger kids, but the older ones need more space.The price difference at that time would only be $ I think that your big kids will be happier in the Frontier.Bottom line.With the Frontier, it is no biggie to pull the lever.The frontier has wider “wings” and are perfect for sleeping children.This is only an issue when I have a third child trying to walk to the back 3rd row between 2 Frontiers with cup holders out!The “wings” around the head are very fat (giving the appearance of a “yonger child’s seat”) and are so close to the child’s head that it causes it to go forward when sleeping.It also shows WAY more stains and soaks up spills quicker than the Graco.This may, however, be an issue for small cars.I can’t imagine that the Graco would be comfortable for long trips.If you need a car seat around the time that Britax has a sale, I would get it over the Graco.

Our daughter is tall and was annoyed with the straps of her last carseat since we couldn’t adjust it to be any higher.But she loves this one and never tries to wiggle out anymore.Couldn’t ask for more!Plus the straps never get turned around, the material is easy to clean and it will grow with her.
